(More customer reviews)I got a great holiday deal on this PN-40 GPS in Dec 2010.
I had great hopes for this Delorme unit even with the many
negative reviews on Amazon and the web.
Delorme has had great maps for years and this is the third
generation of their PN series GPS. I used this for about 10 days
and tried very hard to like it, but it has too many flaws.
1. From a cold start it took 9.5 minutes in clear sky view to get
a location fix in Maine. Unit wanted to shut down after about 6 minutes
without a fix but I let it continue. Garmin time to location fix =1 minute!
2. Battery life was 6 hour 10 min with new alkaline batteries. My unit
did not lock-up when batteries died as other reviewers have stated.
3. Buttons are OK but with heavy use I can see how they would break.
4. Software is awkward but there are web sites that walk you thru it.
A novice will spend 2-3 weeks climbing the learning curve.
On the positive side, the included Topo USA V8.0 is a big benefit. It covers
the entire mainland US and can be customized for your area. An SD card fits
under the batteries for custom map layers and a 1GB card was included.
Garmin Topo maps are sold by region and the entire USA set is hundreds of $$.
Overall I was disappointed after my 10 day trial with the PN-40.
Returned it and purchased a Garmin 400T. Garmin is costly but after 3 hours
use I was happy with my decision.
