It gets the job done, sort of.
The charging is via the usb port on the edge of the garmin for both the wall charge and the in-auto use. This is the same port that is used to connect to the computer. It is not the port that the charger that came with the garmin uses to connect in the car, i.e., the one on the back.
Despite the 'rapid charge' claim, the unit is not charged at the end of a drive, so if you want to use it on foot, you will not be able to get very far.
On the other hand, it is hard to figure out what unit to get from Garmin's web site and they are all much more expensive.
